Vietnam and Netherlands Partner to Combat African Swine Fever and Establish Disease-Free Zones
Hanoi, Vietnam – On August 21, at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands, hosted a conference on "Government-Business Cooperation to Combat African Swine Fever (ASF) in Vietnam." The event also focused on sharing the Netherlands' experience in establishing disease-free zones within the livestock sector, with an aim to boost meat exports.
The conference was co-chaired by Mr. Le Quoc Doanh, Deputy Minister of MARD, and Her Excellency Elsbeth Akkerman, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Vietnam.
Attendees included representatives from the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development of provinces where De Heus has significant projects, such as Son La, Dak Lak, Binh Phuoc, Soc Trang, Vinh Long, Nam Dinh, and Binh Dinh. Also present were the Board of Directors of De Heus Netherlands in Vietnam, numerous partners, large-scale livestock farms nationwide, and other officials from the agricultural sector.
Vietnam Seeks Dutch Expertise to Combat ASF and Boost Meat Exports
At a recent conference, delegates discussed the overall demand for pork, pig farming practices, the African Swine Fever (ASF) situation, and ASF prevention measures implemented in Vietnam. A key focus was the sharing of Dutch experiences in establishing disease-free zones and effectively partitioning and isolating infected areas to prevent further spread. Specifically, the discussion delved into zoning for disease freedom according to World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) concepts, aiming to enable Vietnam to safely export meat to other countries, thereby avoiding trade barriers related to food safety. Additionally, a representative from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture shared insights on establishing a contingency fund for disease outbreaks and natural disasters in the livestock sector. This fund would involve participation and management by the government, NGOs, businesses, and farms to quickly and effectively support farms impacted by such events.
Mr. Gabor Fluit, CEO of De Heus Asia, acknowledged that while the Vietnamese government has provided positive support to farmers affected by ASF, the assistance has been delayed, causing difficulties for livestock producers.
Regarding the establishment of disease-free zones, Mr. Fluit emphasized that if Vietnam successfully implements these zones, it could export pork to Japan and South Korea, and even chicken breast to Europe, where the value of chicken breast is two to three times higher than in Vietnam. He also proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, along with local authorities, support businesses in collaborating with farmers to establish disease-free zones within a 3 km2 radius.
Echoing the importance of disease-free zones, Mr. Vu Manh Hung, CEO of Hung Nhon Group, asserted that such zones are essential for Vietnam. He highlighted their benefits not only for farming and production but also for ensuring the future export potential of the entire livestock industry, providing stable, high incomes for farmers, and creating jobs for people in remote areas.
Mr. Phan Trong Ho, Director of the Binh Dinh Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, concurred with these views. However, he also pointed out challenges faced by his department, such as small-scale and fragmented farming, and insufficient land for investors' needs. Consequently, Mr. Ho requested that De Heus Group collaborate with Minh Du Breeding Chicken Company to establish a model disease-free zone for chicken farming in Binh Dinh province.
This conference is expected to provide agricultural authorities, animal feed producers, slaughterhouses, distributors, and livestock farms with a clearer understanding of disease management, prevention, the establishment of disease-free zones, traceability, and sustainable farming practices aimed at boosting exports.
