"The peace we enjoy today was won through the blood, tears and youth of generations who sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland"
The Regiment 207 Martyrs Memorial Site, located in Da Bien Hamlet, Thanh Phuoc Commune, Tay Ninh Province, was inaugurated on October 22, 2012, and recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic. Behind its solemn grounds lies the heroic and tragic story of the Battle of Da Bien in early October 1973. At that time, Regiment 207, a main-force unit of Military Region 8, was marching from the Parrot’s Beak area near the Cambodian border, crossing the Vam Co Tay River toward the Kien Tuong battlefield. In the early hours of October 3, 1973, when the regiment reached the flooded melaleuca forest and marshland of Da Bien Hamlet, its soldiers were surrounded and attacked by opposing forces with heavy firepower.

In the unequal battle, more than 200 officers and soldiers of Regiment 207 heroically laid down their lives. Many were still very young and had been students at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and other universities in northern Vietnam, including institutions specializing in technology, water resources, education and transport. They had temporarily left their lecture halls and studies behind to answer the call of the Fatherland.

Due to the harsh battlefield conditions, the flooded melaleuca terrain and continued enemy operations, the search, recovery and burial of the fallen soldiers could not be fully carried out at the time. To this day, the remains of many soldiers have yet to be found. After national reunification, while reclaiming and developing the Da Bien area, local residents repeatedly discovered human remains alongside personal belongings such as pith helmets, everyday items and weapons once used by the soldiers.
Out of gratitude and profound respect, the people of Da Bien Hamlet voluntarily contributed their time and effort to build a small shrine from melaleuca wood with a thatched roof, providing a place to offer incense to the soldiers who had fallen there. Over the years, the shrine was carefully maintained and expanded, becoming a place where local residents regularly came to pay tribute. They regarded the fallen soldiers as their own children and relatives who had helped protect the land.

In 2012, the Regiment 207 Martyrs Memorial Site was rebuilt on a larger scale over an area of nearly 5,000 square metres and recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic. In 2016, the memorial monument was further completed through the joint efforts of local authorities, residents, the Regiment 207 Liaison Committee, and generations of staff and students from Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
Before the sacred memory of the heroic martyrs, every member of the delegation was deeply reminded that today’s peace was earned through the blood, tears and youth of countless generations. Their sacrifices will forever be remembered, serving as a lasting reminder for today’s generation to live responsibly, uphold solidarity, and work together to build an increasingly prosperous homeland and nation.
